Frequently Asked Questions

What is Base Wallet?

Base Wallet is a self-custody crypto wallet that puts you in control of your crypto, NFTs, and digital assets. It's your gateway to the decentralized web, allowing you to securely store, send, receive, and interact with thousands of crypto assets and decentralized applications.

How do I recover my wallet if I lose my device?

When you create a Base Wallet, you'll receive a 12-word recovery phrase. Write this down and store it securely. If you lose your device, you can reinstall Base Wallet on a new device and use your recovery phrase to restore your wallet and access all your assets.

Which cryptocurrencies does Base Wallet support?

Base Wallet supports thousands of cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and all ERC-20 tokens. You can also store and view NFTs across multiple chains including Ethereum, Polygon, and Optimism.

How do I connect to dApps?

To connect to a dApp, simply visit the dApp's website using the in-app browser in Base Wallet. The dApp will detect your wallet and prompt you to connect. You can also use WalletConnect to connect to dApps on your desktop browser by scanning the QR code with Base Wallet.

What networks does Base Wallet support?

Base Wallet supports multiple networks including Ethereum, Polygon, Optimism, Arbitrum, Avalanche, and Base. You can easily switch between networks in the app to interact with different ecosystems.

Is there a fee to use Base Wallet?

Base Wallet is free to download and use. However, blockchain networks charge transaction fees (gas fees) for sending crypto and interacting with smart contracts. These fees vary by network and current demand.

How do I back up my wallet?

The most important step in securing your wallet is backing up your 12-word recovery phrase. When you first create your wallet, write down these words in order on paper and store them in a secure location. Never store your recovery phrase digitally or share it with anyone. This phrase is the only way to recover your wallet if you lose access to your device. We recommend keeping multiple physical copies in different secure locations.

Can I buy crypto directly in Base Wallet?

Yes! Base Wallet offers integrated on-ramp solutions that allow you to purchase cryptocurrency using a credit card, debit card, or bank transfer directly within the app. Simply navigate to the "Buy" section, select your preferred payment method, choose the cryptocurrency you want to purchase, and follow the verification steps. Please note that availability of payment methods may vary by region, and third-party fees may apply.

Why is my transaction pending or failed?

Transaction delays or failures can occur for several reasons. The most common cause is setting gas fees too low during times of network congestion. If your transaction is pending, you can try speeding it up by increasing the gas fee. Failed transactions typically happen when gas fees run out during execution or when there are issues with smart contract interactions. Always ensure you have enough native tokens (ETH, MATIC, etc.) to cover gas fees, and check network status before making large transactions.

How do I view and manage my NFTs?

All your NFTs are automatically displayed in the "Collectibles" or "NFTs" tab within Base Wallet. The wallet supports NFTs from multiple chains including Ethereum, Polygon, Base, and more. You can view detailed information about each NFT, including its metadata, rarity traits, and transaction history. To send an NFT, simply select it, tap "Send," and enter the recipient's address. You can also import NFTs that don't appear automatically by adding the contract address.

Can I import an existing wallet into Base Wallet?

Absolutely! If you have an existing wallet from another provider, you can easily import it into Base Wallet using your 12 or 24-word recovery phrase. During setup, select "Import Existing Wallet" instead of creating a new one, then enter your recovery phrase in the correct order. You can also import wallets using a private key. Once imported, you'll have full access to all your crypto assets and transaction history.

What are gas fees and how can I reduce them?

Gas fees are transaction costs paid to blockchain validators to process your transactions. These fees fluctuate based on network demand. To reduce gas fees: 1) Use Layer 2 networks like Base, Optimism, or Arbitrum which offer significantly lower fees than Ethereum mainnet, 2) Transact during off-peak hours when network congestion is lower, 3) Use the gas fee estimator in Base Wallet to find optimal times, and 4) Be patient with non-urgent transactions and set lower gas fees if you're willing to wait longer for confirmation.

Can I use Base Wallet on multiple devices?

Yes! You can access your wallet on multiple devices by importing your recovery phrase on each device. Your recovery phrase is the key to your wallet, not the app itself. Simply download Base Wallet on your new device and select "Import Existing Wallet" during setup. Enter your 12-word recovery phrase, and you'll have access to all your assets. Remember to secure each device with biometric authentication or a strong PIN. Changes made on one device (like adding tokens or adjusting settings) won't automatically sync, as each installation is independent.
